Ingredients
- 1 Cottage cheese 9% (tvorog)pack 300 g ≈ $3.00 60 g
- 2 Eggspack 10 pcs ≈ $1.89 0.5 pcs
- 3 Wheat flour 10 g
- 4 Bananas≈ $1.45 per kg 20 g
Grey rows are pantry staples: salt, oil, spices. They are not counted in the serving price.
Method
Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Line a baking sheet with parchment.
Press the cottage1 cheese through a sieve or mash it well with a fork, so no large curds remain.
Mash the banana4 with a fork into a puree with no lumps. Beat the egg with a fork in a cup; you need half of it per serving (about 25 g), so add the rest to an omelet or another dish.
Combine the cottage1 cheese, banana4 puree and half the egg, add the flour and mix into a smooth, thick dough.
With wet hands, roll into balls 2–3 cm in diameter, about 4 per serving, and place them on the parchment.
Bake for 20–25 minutes at 180 °C, until the balls are firm and lightly golden, with no raw dough in the middle when cut.
Let cool for 10 minutes. Before serving, cut a ball in half and check that it is not hot inside.
Tips
- Why it works
- Press the cottage cheese through a sieve so no grains remain in the balls: your toddler won't choke on them, and the dough bakes evenly and doesn't crumble.
- Substitutions
- Banana can be replaced with 20 g of unsweetened applesauce, and the balls will be slightly less sweet. Replace wheat flour with the same amount of rice or oat flour, and the dough will stay thick.
- Common mistakes
- If the dough is too runny, the balls spread into flat cakes. Add flour 1 tsp at a time until the dough holds its shape on the spoon. A raw center shows as a wet, pale cut surface.
- Storing and reheating
- Keep in a closed container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Before serving, warm for 20-30 seconds in the microwave or 5 minutes in the oven, then let cool and cut in half.
- Serve with
- Serve as a snack with pieces of soft pear or plain yogurt. Give your toddler the ball cut in half and warm, not hot.
In short
- A child's portion for ages 1–3; suitable from 18 months. For younger kids, halve it and purée.
