Navy-Style Pasta with Simmered Ground Beef

Ingredients

1
  1. 1 Pastapack 450 g ≈ $1.36 35 g
  2. 2 Ground beefpack 500 g ≈ $7.49 45 g
  3. 3 Onions≈ $1.60 per kg 15 g
  4. 4 Carrots≈ $1.50 per kg 20 g
  5. 5 Butterpack 180 g ≈ $1.57 3 g
  6. 6 Salt to taste

Grey rows are pantry staples: salt, oil, spices. They are not counted in the serving price.

Method

  1. Peel the onion3 and carrot4 and grate them on a fine grater.

  2. Place the ground2 meat in a saucepan, add 100 ml water and break it up with a fork so there are no lumps. Bring to a boil and skim off the foam.

  3. Add the onion3 and carrot4, add salt, cover and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes, until the meat is gray and tender inside and the water has almost evaporated.

  4. Boil the small pasta1 (elbows or shells) in water for 8–10 minutes, until completely soft. Drain, leaving 2 spoonfuls of the cooking water.

  5. Combine the pasta1 with the meat, add the butter5, stir and heat for 1 minute.

  6. Cool to lukewarm. If needed, chop any large pieces with a knife.

Tips

Why it works
Mince the meat in cold water first and only then heat it. That way the meat doesn't clump, and your little one doesn't have to chew dense pieces.
Substitutions
Swap the beef mince for turkey or chicken mince, same amount, 45 g. Swap the small macaroni for vermicelli and cook it for 5–6 minutes.
Common mistakes
The mince turns dry and lumpy if too much water cooks off. Watch the saucepan: there should be a couple of spoonfuls of juice on the bottom, otherwise add 2 spoonfuls of water.
Storing and reheating
Keep in a closed container in the fridge for 2 days. Reheat with a spoonful of water under a lid until hot, then cool to warm. Pasta falls apart in the freezer, so don't freeze it.
Serve with
Serve with fresh grated cucumber or grated carrot on the side, if your child already eats raw vegetables when finely grated.

In short

  • A child's portion for ages 1–3; suitable from 18 months. For younger kids, halve it and purée.
