Method
Peel the potatoes1, cut them up and cook in water for 20 minutes, until completely soft.
Finely chop the onion3. Simmer the ground2 meat with the onion and 80 ml water, covered, for 15 minutes, breaking it up with a fork until the meat is gray and tender. Add salt.
Drain the potatoes1 and mash them with warm milk4 and 3 g butter5. Let cool slightly and stir in the egg.
Grease the baking dish with the remaining butter5. Spread half the mashed potato1, then the meat, then the rest of the potato, and smooth the top.
Bake at 180 °C for 25 minutes, until the casserole is set and lightly browned.
Let cool for 5 minutes and cut into small pieces.
Tips
- Why it works
- Stir the egg into slightly cooled mash. Otherwise it curdles into flakes from the heat, and the casserole won't set into one solid layer.
- Substitutions
- Swap the beef mince for turkey or chicken mince, 45 g. Swap the milk for the potato cooking water, 30 ml, and the flavor will be less creamy.
- Common mistakes
- The casserole falls apart when sliced if you cut it hot. Let it stand for 5 minutes: the edges should pull away from the dish and the middle shouldn't wobble.
- Storing and reheating
- Keep in the fridge for 2 days. Reheat in the microwave for 40 seconds or in the oven at 160 °C for 10 minutes under foil. Portions keep in the freezer for up to 1 month.
- Serve with
- Serve with a spoonful of sour cream and grated carrot or soft peeled cucumber for dinner.
In short
- A child's portion for ages 1–3; suitable from 18 months. For younger kids, halve it and purée.
