Method
Prep: Rinse the split peas under cold water until the water runs clear; add 500 ml water and place the pot on low heat.
Cook the peas: Bring to a boil over medium heat, then simmer for 25 minutes until tender and thick, stirring occasionally.
Heat a skillet or wide pot over medium heat; sauté the onion2, garlic3, and ginger for 2 minutes, then add turmeric and cumin, cooking another 2 minutes until fragrant.
Stir in the tomato7 paste and cook for 1–2 minutes until smooth and slightly thickened.
Combine the sautéed mix with the peas: Pour the skillet contents into the pot, stir, season with salt to taste, and bring to a gentle simmer; simmer 5 minutes until flavors meld and the stew thickens.
Rice: Rinse rice under cold water until clear, then cook in a 1:2 rice-to-water ratio on low heat, covered, until tender (~12–15 mins); remove from heat and let steam 5 minutes.
Serve: Plate the split pea stew alongside the rice; garnish with fresh4 herbs if desired.
Notes: Prep the peas and rice ahead to save time; swap ginger for extra garlic3 or cumin for coriander if preferred.
Tips
- Why it works
- Simmer the peas on low heat first to prevent them from splitting open and turning mushy; high heat breaks them too fast.
- Substitutions
- Use 10g dried lentils instead of peas for faster cooking, or swap fresh ginger for 10g garlic if you lack it.
- Common mistakes
- Overcooking the peas makes them disintegrate; check texture after 20 minutes—they should hold shape but be soft.
- Storing and reheating
- Keeps 4 days in the fridge; reheat in a pot with 20ml water over medium heat until hot. Freeze without rice for 3 months.
- Serve with
- Pair with a side of cucumber salad and a cold yogurt drink to balance the richness and heat.
In short
- Marked healthy: the planner picks it more often for the goals “lose weight” and “eat well”.
